Who Will Coach the San Francisco 49ers in 2017?

The San Francisco 49ers have had a tumultuous last few seasons, as they reached the NFC championship game and the Super Bowl the previous season, only to come crashing back down to earth. They have had three coaches over the last three years and this season has been the worst let down so far, having won only two games this year and suffering through a thirteen game losing streak. Head coach Chip Kelly is out the door after his first season and with his recent departure, there is quite a bit of talk about who will come into replace him. While there is a lot of speculation regarding the potential candidates to take over as head coach, a new general manager is more than likely going to be hired first, who will then make a selection for head coach.

There are quite a few candidates out there that would seemingly make fitting coaches for the San Francisco 49ers, while there is no question that they need to get it right this time. One coach that is high on the radar for the position is Tom Cable, who is the former head coach of the Oakland Raiders and is currently the offensive line and assistant head coach of the Seattle Seahawks. While he did not enjoy much success on his first roll of the dice in the Bay Area, he is familiar with the 49ers organization and they have targeted him for an interview. However, there is a lot of speculation that the top person in line for the job is Kyle Shanahan, who is currently serving as the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons. He has a huge amount of experience, having grown up as an understudy to his father, Mike Shanahan and many analysts think that he is the best candidate for the job.

Josh McDaniels is another person that is of great interest to the 49ers, but it is questionable whether or not he would want to leave his position as offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots. While he likely would love to have another shot at being head coach in the league, after having a stint as head coach of the Denver Broncos, he is on a winning team and it may be hard to pull him to the Bay Area. Anthony Lynn is another coach that is of interest to the 49ers, but there is a good chance that he will remain head coach of the Buffalo Bills, after getting several promotions this season. Prior to the current season, the highest position that Lynn has held was running backs coach, but after the firing of Rex Ryan, he has taken the reigns as head coach. A few of the other coaches that the 49ers are looking at include Matt Patricia, who is the current defensive coordinator for the patriots, and Sean McVay, who is the current offensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins.

While the 49ers have a lot of talent on their roster, they have not found a coach that can pull the pieces together, which is why it is so vital for them to select the perfect head coach this season. While there are many candidates, they look to be in a strong position heading into next season, as they officially have been awarded the second draft pick and will likely pick up a new quarterback. This combination may easily lead them back to a winning season, but with so many potential head coaches on offer, there is no question that it is going to be a tough decision.
